Protests hamper voter registration in parts of Eastern Cape

Eastern Cape provincial electoral officer Kayakazi Magudumana says a number of voting stations did not open as scheduled on Saturday morning as communities were embarking on service delivery protests for various reasons as well as dissatisfaction with the demarcation process.

She said that out of the 4791 stations in the Eastern Cape there were 56 stations that did not open on time by 10h30.

Areas most affected by these external factors were 29 voting stations in the Amahlati Municipality.

Reports from the IEC's provincial operations confirm the opening of approximately 99 percent of the 22 925 voting stations country wide on time and a steady stream of eligible voters visiting stations to register and update their registration details.

DA MP Kevin Mileham visited Gonubie Primary School in East London and said voters had been streaming in to register and confirm their registration details.

He encouraged everyone to register and particularly for first-time voters to ensure that their registration details are in order.
