The Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) says it's considering converting intersections with traffic lights into traffic circles following an unprecedented wave of vandalism.
The Municipality says it has to fork out R3.4 million from its internal funds to repair the lights.
Spokesperson, Samkelo Ngwenya, says the Metro is also looking at installing additional security measures.
He says assessments show that in some areas, conversions will not be possible due to high buildings or not enough land to construct traffic circles.
BCM says there is a national shortage of the required specification multi-core cables and controllers to fix traffic lights as other municipalities are also experiencing these never seen before levels of theft and vandalism.
