The Kouga Dam: Supplied
The combination of strong winds, high temperatures and a lack of rain is having a severe impact on the level of Nelson Mandela Bay's main supply dams.
In the past ten days, the combined level of the Metro's four main supply dams has dropped by more than a full percent.
On the 21st of February, the combined level was at 17.16%.
And, according to the latest figures released by the Municipality on Thursday, the level has dropped to just 16% of total combined capacity.
The largest supply dam, the Kouga is at 15.28%, the Churchill at 22.09, the Impofu at 12.44 and the Groendal at 28.26%
Weather office spokesperson Garth Sampson has further cautioned that the seasonal forecast for the region is not looking promising.
Earlier on Thursday, the Democratic Alliance laid criminal charges against Nelson Mandela Bay executive mayor, Eugene Johnson and acting city manager, Noxolo Nqwazi.
The party's accused the Metro of negligence for not letting residents know immediately that the quality of water had deteriorated and knowingly providing residents with contaminated drinking water for at least four months.
DA councillor, Dries van der Westhuyzen, says a report to the Public Health Committee revealed that the Metro's water quality had started showing a steady decline in October last year.
