Buffalo City Metro
The DA in the Buffalo City Municipality council says the recently imposed rates and tariff increases in the Metro are technically illegal.
According to DA councillor Sue Bentley, the 2020/2021 budget was illegally adopted by the ANC-led council in June.
Bentley told AlgoaFM News this illegal decision places the municipality at significant risk of litigation.
She warned it could also negatively affect ratepayers by bringing service delivery to a halt.
Bentley says this illegality has been confirmed by the minutes of a meeting held at the end of June which show that the ANC councillors did not have the numbers to pass the budget.
Municipal spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya says it would be premature for them to comment until they receive formal correspondence on the matter.
