Buffalo City Municipality is cracking down on crèche that may be flouting city by-laws and other regulations.
The inspection blitz began in Southernwood on Wednesday and comes in the wake of the recent deaths of two children at a local crèche.
However, Buffalo City spokesperson, Samkelo Ngwenya, says it was not all smooth sailing as the first creche initially refused entry to their team, but the inspection was completed later.
He says the operation, with the Department of Social Development, is targeting crèches that are operating outside of the bylaws.
He says they've already found transgressions at some of the centres visited on Wednesday.
Fines were issued to centres that had hygiene issues, too many children as allowed by the law and a lack of nutritional food and proper mattresses.
Ngwenya says the operation will be expanded to the rest of the metro.
