The senior official at Buffalo City Metro Municipality (BCMM) who was gunned down in a hail of bullets on Wednesday afternoon has been identified as Nceba Ncunyana.
The incident which claimed the Metro's General Manager for infrastructure took place on the N2 highway near Ntabozuko (formerly known as Berlin ) between East London and eQonce (King Williams Town).
There had been two previous hits on his life.
In August last year, Ncunyana, who was Acting City Manager at the time, was shot and wounded in the arm when gunmen emerged from a VW Polo and fired shots.
The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) condemned the hit on Ncunyana and said in a statement that they were shocked by the incident.
"His untimely death comes at a time when SALGA has consistently called upon the security cluster to step up its work to bring to justice all those already apprehended for these heinous acts and speedily investigate these killings," the statement reads.
The Association emphasized their concern over the increase in the number of killings of municipal officials in the country.
Samkelo Ngwenya, spokesperson for the Metro said they are not in a position to comment on the matter due to its sensitivity.
SAPS are yet to release a statement on the murder.
