Eastern Cape police have confirmed that a man was killed as rumours spread like wild-fire about abductions in the East London area.
Provincial police spokesperson, brigadier Marinda Mills, reiterated an appeal to the public to stop spreading malicious rumours.
Last week two men were attacked and stabbed by a mob in Buffalo Street as the rumours took hold.
Speaking on the DMB on Algoa FM a short while ago, Mills made the following impassioned plea.
"Whoever started this rumour, its malicious and is not true. We are making a call on the public to stop sending these messages. We had a man killed in East London this weekend by 'n mob, because somebody believed these rumours and said that this man was involved with kids, and then he was killed" she said.
