A 43-year-old Gqeberha woman is in police custody after police discovered stolen copper cables on her property that operates as an illegal scrapyard.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the designated Second Hand Goods Officer from SAPS Bethelsdorp received information and a multi-disciplinary team was put together.
She says on Thursday Non-Ferrous Metal officers from SAPS, representatives from Transnet, Telkom, Eskom and the Municipality swooped on the property in Bloemendal.
Colonel Naidu says copper cables with a total weight of 2 591 kg were found inside and outside the premises with some positively identified by Transnet as belonging to them.
She says the estimated scrap metal value of the copper is R168 415 while the replacement value is estimated to be over R600 000.
The suspect was detained in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act and possession of the suspected stolen property.
