Nelson Mandela Bay's second-largest supply dam is no longer able to supply the Metro with water.
The Metro says in a statement that the barge pump station at the Impofu dam must now be decommissioned.
It says the Impofu dam levels are so low that the pumps are at risk of sucking up sediment as the pumps are close to the bottom of the dam basin.
An assessment of Impofu's basin is now being done to determine a suitable spot that is deeper so the barge can be moved to continue the safe abstraction of water.
Meanwhile, the Metro says water supply is being pumped as it becomes available from the Churchill dam, following the completion of maintenance to this pipeline, but unfortunately there is a peak in demand that is delaying the recovery of the reticulation system.
This leaves the Churchill system with a deficit of about 28 megalitres per day.
The Metro stated previously that it could no longer draw water from the largest supply dam, the Kouga, as it had already reached its quota.
The remaining water in the Kouga is for agricultural use.
Affected areas include large parts of the Metro including coast towns of the Kouga Municipality such as Jeffreys Bay and St Francis.
