Police in Gqeberha are trying to identify a robbery suspect who was shot and killed by a member of the public in Struanway on Wednesday night.
Spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said the shooting happened after a 39-year-old woman was robbed of her cell phone while waiting in a car outside a shop in Uitenhage Road for her boyfriend.
The suspect allegedly opened the driver’s side door of the vehicle and pointed a firearm at her before grabbing a cell phone and fleeing.
Janse van Rensburg said when she told her boyfriend what had happened, they went in search of the suspect who was spotted in Struanway by the woman.
She said when her boyfriend confronted the suspect, he pointed his firearm at him, however, the boyfriend was also armed and fired a shot killing the suspect.
“Algoa Park detectives are now trying to identify the deceased. Police found a 9 mm firearm and the stolen cell phone on the scene,” Janse Van Rensburg said.
A case of armed robbery and an inquest is being investigated.
Janse Van Rensburg’s appealed to anyone who can assist in identifying the deceased person or know of anyone who may be missing since Wednesday to contact Algoa Park SAPS.
