A 33-year-old man appeared in the Gelvandale Magistrates court in Gqeberha on Friday for allegedly assaulting his mother with an axe handle.
The incident happened Thursday morning at the victim's house in St Oswald Street in West End.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says it is alleged that the 65-year-old woman asked her son, Baggio Brown, to assist her with the washing when he became agitated and attacked her.
She says the victim sustained bruises to her head, face and arms.
The victim managed to alert her neighbours who came to her assistance.
Colonel Naidu says at 6 pm Brown was brought to the police station by members of the community.
He was charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and was remanded in custody until the 17th of this month.
Colonel Naidu says Brown's mother is still in hospital.
