A policeman was wounded and a suspect arrested following a shootout in Motherwell in Gqeberha late on Saturday night.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg said members conducting crime prevention duties in Mtwendwe Street in Unit 7 when they were approached by at least four suspects who opened fire on them.
She said police retaliated and one suspect was arrested and a firearm seized, while others fled in different directions.
Janse Van Rensburg also said that during the incident one member sustained a gunshot wound in the lower body and was later discharged from hospital.
Meanwhile, the 34-year-old suspect was detained on charges of attempted murder, pointing of a firearm, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
He will appear in the Motherwell magistrate court during the week.
