The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has arrested a 28-year-old police detective from Barkley East for the alleged murder of a suspect in custody.
IPID spokesperson, Ndileka Cola says the deceased, a 25-year-old man was detained for a murder he allegedly committed in Cape Town last year and was arrested in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday.
She says the following day, four police members allegedly took the suspect to the Detective offices near the police station to interrogate him, and later in the day, two officers brought him back to the police station.
Cola says the charge office commander noticed that the suspect could not walk and was very weak, and the two police officers assisted him to his cell, where was later found dead.
One of the officers was arrested on Friday and he will appear in the Elliot Magistrate's Court on Monday while the other police member is still at large.
