Barkley East farm murders: Accused makes first appearance

The 22-year-old man accused of murdering an elderly couple, Dawid en Ralie de Villiers, on their farm in Barkly East last week, made his first brief appearance in the town's periodical court on Tuesday morning.

Thulani Mkhentane will be back in court on the 29th of October.

Farmers and community members showed up in their numbers to show their support. Mkhentane, a Lesotho national appeared in court with his head covered and endured insults from angry residents. The State will oppose bail for which the accused will be applying for in due course. He will be charged with two counts of housebreaking with the itent to murder. Two of murder and one of attempted murder. He will remain in custody.
