A 42-year-old Eastern Cape mother and two Bangladesh nationals who are accused of sexually exploiting and raping two minor girls were denied bail by the Keiskammahoek Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
The mother has been charged with sexual exploitation of a minor, while the two Bangladeshis, Tanvir Rahman (34) and Roime Mohammed (36), were charged with sexual exploitation of a minor and rape.
The National Prosecuting Authority said bail was denied “because they failed to present exceptional circumstances in their applications for them to be released.”
Spokesperson, Anelisa Ngckani, said Rahman and Mohammed were also seen as flight risks as they do not have family ties, assets, or occupational ties in Keiskammahoek.
“The 42-year-old mother was also seen as someone who might intimidate and influence witnesses and complainants as one of the complainants is her daughter,” she said.
The state alleges that the woman “sold” her daughter and her boyfriend’s niece to the pair for sex and received R400 payment each time.
The three were remanded in custody to 14 October.
