District court prosecutor Dumisani Kumbaca will continue to languish in jail after the Grahamstown High Court dismissed his appeal against the East London Magistrates Court’s decision to deny him bail in February this year.
According to NPA regional spokesperson Anelisa Ngcakani, the appeal was dismissed because Kumbaca did not cooperate with the police and tried to evade arrest.
Ngcakani said the High Court further ruled that 50-year-old Kumbaca’s experience as a prosecutor and a former policeman would likely cause him to undermine the judicial process.
Kumbaca was arrested in East London on the 13th of January this year following a police sting operation two days earlier.
He faces charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice for allegedly burning two drunken driving case dockets and quashing charges against 33-year-old Mzoxolo Twangu, who paid him a total of R25 000.
