Uitenhage police found the body of a 38-year-old woman in her home in Kamesh on Sunday with her one-year-old baby boy sitting next to her.
The boy was unhurt.
Police spokesperson, Warrant-Officer Gerda Swart, says a suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of the woman, who has been identified as Cynthia Malgas.
Swart says she had been severely beaten.
The 40-year-old suspect, said to be the baby's father, will appear in court on Tuesday.
The two were not married.
