Avbob foundation donates library to impoverished PE school

The AVBOB Foundation handed over a mobile container library to 1193 Booysen Park learners at Sapphire Road Primary School in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.

The library project is being done in partnership with Department of Basic Education and intends to support previously disadvantaged communities.

AVBOB CEO, Frik Rademan said that the foundation, which is only eighteen months old, aims to launch libraries all over South Africa.

"The main intention is to make a difference in schools, a long lasting and substantial difference to previously disadvantaged communities. This is our second launch, our intention is to launch 30 mobile libraries over a period of three years to schools all around South Africa." said Rademan

The Director of Partnerships in the Department of Basic Education, Louis Taylor, said the project forms part of a broader initiative to improve literacy.

"As you may know South Africa for the second year has had annual national assessments where we test Grade 3, 6, and 9 with numeracy and literacy. It's sad to say, although we do understand the reasons, that our literacy rates are not doing well. This is part of a broader initiative to improve literacy skills." said Taylor.

Principal Bruce Damons said that the library will mean a lot to the learners as well as the community.

"In the area there is only one library at the moment. Obviously we understand the pressures with the growing community of Booysen Park, so the libray is going to mean much more than just for our school, we intending to open it up for our entire community." said Damons.
