Uitenhage police are investigating a case of malicious damage to property after three men attempted to burn the Anglo Boer War memorial statue in the town's market sqaure on Thursday.
The memorial depicts an old South African soldier erected in memory of volunteers from the Uitenhage district during the war that lasted from 1899 to 1902.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei, says it had been alleged that the men were dressed in red and could be members of the Economic Freedom Fighters.
Seekoei says no arrests have been made as yet.
"Upon arrival of the police the suspects fled from the scene. No arrests have been made and we appointed a seasoned detective to investigate the particular case." says Seekoei.
