Aspen Pharmacare’s PE plant confirms first positive case of COVID-19

Aspen Pharmacare has confirmed that an employee at its Port Elizabeth site has tested positive for COVID-19.

Group Operating Officer, Lorraine Hill says the employee is self-isolating and receiving the necessary medical attention in line with their COVID-19 risk mitigation plan.

She says management is closely monitoring the situation and remains in contact with the employee and his family.

Hill says as a precautionary measure, they have sent home about 50 employees who worked on the shift in the same unit for self-isolation pending test results.

The Port Elizabeth site employs more than 2,100 people.

Production in the affected unit has been suspended for 48 hours for professional deep-cleaning and sanitisation.

Hill says they are monitoring the situation daily, putting the health, safety and security of employees, customers, and communities first.

She says the management team is cooperating with the Department of Health and the Department of Employment and Labour.
