Arsonist torch Sterkspruit school

Eastern Cape police are investigating a case of arson after attempts were made to set fire to a school in Sterkspruit, where some residents are threatening to boycott the elections.

Police said extensive damage was caused when tyres were thrown into a hall at the Ekuzoleni Junior Secondary School in Makkhetheng Administrative Area in Sterkspruit in the early hours of the morning on Monday.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Sibongile Soci, says a security guard noticed smoke in the school hall and raised the alarm.

She says a case of arson is being investigated and no arrests have yet been made.

"We would like to assure the community that all areas are being closely monitored and additional members are on standby to deal with any contingency or crisis that might require our intervention. The provincial commissioner also emphasised that SAPS will not tolerate any form of criminality, intimidation, disruptive behaviour or public violence during the voting process." says Soci.

The IEC says the school has been identified as a voting station.
