A warrant of arrest has been issued for an alleged rape suspect who failed to honour his last court appearance in 2020 and has since been missing from his home in Walmer Township.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said in a statement on Monday that Simnikiwe Jimi (27) was released on R500 bail following his arrest for the alleged rape of a 34-year-old woman in Walmer.
She said he was scheduled to appear in court on 15 September 2020, but failed to show up. Naidu said efforts were made to trace Jimi but were unsuccessful.
"The warrant was issued in March 2021 but the detective was following up on various information received about his whereabouts with no positive results," she said.
Jimi was arrested in April 2019 and granted bail the following month.
Naidu said according to information he may be in the Quigney area in East London.
“Police are appealing to the community to assist them in tracing Jimi. Anyone who may know of his whereabouts is asked to contact Detective Constable Xolisa Khedame of the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Gqeberha, on 073 307 9752or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station,” she said.
