The Coega Development Corporation has announced plans for the development of a R2-billion aqua-farming facility on 300 hectares of land in the Coega Industrial Development Zone in Port Elizabeth.
CDC agro processing project manager, Dr. Keith Du Plessis says the facility will focus on the commercial cultivation of marine animals and plants.
He says approximately 5 000 jobs can be created for the local economy through the project.
Du Plessis says the findings of the feasibility study show that environmental conditions are ideal for abalone and finfish farming...
"By 2020 we can create about 2 000 permanent jobs through abalone farming on 80 hectares and 3 000 permanent jobs for finfish farming on 120 hectares. We are also exploring seaweed farming as it can be used as abalone feed and also has various pharmaceutical uses" he said.
