Anti-gang unit makes strides in PE's Northern Areas


The Anti-Gang Unit has confiscated two firearms, three toy guns and an air rifle in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas.

Police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu says a 28-year-old suspect was arrested early on Sunday morning for being in possession of a stolen firearm in Bethesldorp.

She says police saw two men running down a street, and one of them was seen with a firearm in his hand, which he threw away in a yard.

Naidu says he was apprehended, and the firearm was reported stolen in Durban Central in April.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's court on Monday.

While conducting several operations in these areas, the Unit confiscated three toy firearms from a house in Bethelsdorp and an air rifle was found hidden between shacks in Gelvandale.

Col Naidu says on Friday, members confiscated a 9mm firearm and ammunition from a house in Helenvale  

The serial number of the firearm was filed off.

Since last Monday up until Sunday morning, 12 firearms were recovered of which 9 were reported stolen.
