Nelson Mandela Bay municipality has announced the passing of ANC councillor, Mike Kwenaite, who has died of a Covid19-related illness.

His death was announced by Mayor, Nqaba Bhanga, who said the Ward 17 councillor died on Tuesday.

His death follows that of another ANC chief whip, Ncediso Captain and former mayor, Mongameli Bobani, of the UDM.

Bhanga said Councillor Kwenaite had a long-standing relationship with the municipality, where he served the people of Nelson Mandela Bay.

He served as a PR councillor from 2000 to 2011, and served on the mayoral committee for nine years, from 2000 to 2009.

In 2016 he briefly returned to the municipality as a manager in the mayor’s office, under former mayor Danny Jordaan before returning as a PR councillor in February, following the death of former ANC chief whip Bicks Ndoni.

Bhanga said, “Kwenaite’s untimely passing is a sad reminder to us all about the devastating impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on our lives.”

In a statement, the ANC in the Eastern Cape said it was shocked to receive the sad news of Kwenaite’s passing.

“As the ANC, we wish to convey our sincerest condolences to the Kwenaite family for the loss of their loved one,” said regional task team spokesperson, Luyolo Nqakula.
