Another cyclist attacked in Port Elizabeth

The spate of attacks on cyclists in Port Elizabeth continues.

Previous incidents of cyclists been targetted have been centered in the Victoria Drive/Schoenmakerskop area, but in the latest incident just after noon on Friday - a 65 year old Port Elizabeth doctor was attacked with a screwdriver while cycling in Overbaakens near Walmer Downs and robbed of his bicycle.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu says according to police information, as the cyclist was about to pass the man, he pulled out a screwdriver and attempted to stab the man.

The doctor swerved and lost control and fell.

The suspect, about 20-35 years old demanded the doctor's cell phone and started kicking him.

He sustained injuries to his face but was able to pepper spray the suspect several times as he grabbed the Mountain Bike.

Colonel Naidu says the perpetrator still made off with the bike.

A case of robbery was opened at the Walmer police station. Police went back to the scene and searched the bushes but to no avail.
