The Departments of Basic Education and the Eastern Cape Department of Education have been ordered by a court to supply furniture to 262 rural schools in the Libode district before 2014.
This after four schools represented by the Legal Resource Center took their furniture shortage challenge to court.
Mthatha High Court judge, Mandela Makaula, ordered the department on Thursday to supply 50 000 learners at 262 schools in the district with furniture.
The LRC's Cameron McConnachie says the schools have all been plagued by severe furniture shortages for years despite repeatedly submitting furniture requests to the department.
"We started this court case over a year ago and there was a court order in November 2012 with some success but there was a large degree of non compliance with the court order. This forced us to go back to court so while we are a little bit sad that it has gone on so long we are glad there is a new order. " he said.
