Angry scenes in Walmer Township, Port Elizabeth

Public Order policing members in Port Elizabeth are maintaining a strong presence in Walmer Township where residents are protesting after the Municipality began removing illegal electricity cables from a substation earlier on Thursday.

Police are urging motorists to avoid Victoria Drive as well as Heugh Road between 8th and 10th avenues.

There have been no arrests to date.

AlgoaFM field reporter Raahil Sain is on the scene and says the situation is extremely tense.

Protesters reportedly tried to burn down a councillors office whilst a woman was allegedly hit by a rubber bullet

They are currently waiting for a representative of the Municipality to come and address them
