The ANC Youth League in Nelson Mandela Bay has called on Andile Lungisa to resign as member of the Provincial Executive Committee, and retain his position as Regional Chairperson of the ANC in the Metro.
Lungisa was a member of the PEC when he was elected regional chairman almost two weeks ago.
ANC officials, as well as provincial leadership have called on Lungisa to vacate his position by Thursday or face disciplinary action.
Lungisa previously stated that he will step down as chairman only if the National Executive Committee of the ANC, which meets this weekend, asks him to.
The convener of the ANC Youth League's regional task team in Nelson Mandela Bay, Luyolo Nqakula, explains in a lengthy statement that they would like to see Lungisa retain his position as ANC Chair in the Metro, but relinquish his position in the Provincial Executive.
According to some, it is against the ANC's constitution to hold positions in both bodies of the organisation.
"It is a fact that the constitution of the ANC prohibits its leader from holding leadership positions in two or more of its structures as this will creates a conflict of interest from those who supposed to supervise others," Nqakula said.
Nqakula said there is nothing in the constitution that says a member of higher ranking cannot contest a lower ranking position.
He added that the decision to remove Lungisa is "unconstitutional and devoid of political conscience."
Nqakula says the ANCYL believes that both the national and provincial officials have misinterpreted the meaning of the rule and the intention of the rule.
"The Rule to us means no one must hold positions in two different structures or levels within the African National Congress," Nqakula added.
He concluded by saying they will only accept the NEC's decision as they are the highest decision making body in the ANC.
