A Nelson Mandela Bay ANC Councillor has been gunned down and killed in a late-night shooting in Kwazakele.
Police spokesperson Andre Beetge told Algoa FM News that Ward 20 Councilor Mzwandile Booi sustained several gunshot wounds as he was driving down Tshawuke Street late on Sunday night - he died at the scene.
Booi was the driver of the car which was shot at by an unknown balaclava-clad attacker after he and three other people left a local tavern at around 11 pm.
Beetge says a female passenger was admitted to Dora Nginza hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg while a man and a woman in the backseat were not injured.
He said the motive for the murder is unknown at this stage and a case of murder and attempted murder is being investigated by the Provincial Organised Crime Unit.
Meanwhile, the ANC in the Eastern Cape said it was "devastated" by Booi's murder, which came barely 24hours after the attempted murder of former Nelson Mandela Bay councillor, Mazwi Mini.
The 52-year-old and his family were having dinner at their home in Thoba Street on Saturday night when two shots were fired through the window, wounding him in the lower jaw.
"We urgently call on law enforcement to intensify their work to hunt down the criminals and bring them to book to the full extent of the rule law," said ANC provincial spokesperson, Loyiso Magqashela.
"We also appeal to all ANC members and the broader community of Nelson Mandela Bay to remain calm and allow security organs to uncover and apprehend all those responsible and involved as soon as possible," he said.
No arrests have been made in either of the shooting incidents.
