Eastern Cape police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after five female ANC members were mowed down by a car in Kwanobuhle, Uitenhage on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkholi, said police are still searching for the driver following the incident in Phalo Street.
"It is alleged that a blue Fiat Uno that was allegedly speeding left the road and mowed down five pedestrians, who were sitting on the grass near the road and thereafter sped off. The victims aged between 40 and 31 were taken to Uitenhage Provincial Hospital in two ambulances," said Nkhohli.
"Three victims were treated and discharged, but the remaining two were transferred to Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth. Police opened a case of reckless and negligent driving and with a possibility of additional charges at the later stage of the investigation," he said.
Meanwhile, the ANC in Nelson Mandela Bay said the women sustained serious injuries.
ANC regional spokesperson, Gift Nqondi, said "our thoughts and prayers are with the ANC volunteers and their families. We hope that they will recover very soon".
