The ANC came out tops in by-elections in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, winning three of the four wards contested, but losing one to a former councillor.
The ANC retained two Wards in Mbashe Municipality at Butterworth and Nkonkobe Municipality in Alice.
The ruling party also retained Ward 46 in Uitenhage, beating off the challenge of the DA, UDM and Cope.
However, the ANC conceded Ward 42 in Uitenhage to sacked councillor, Andile Gqabi, who retains the seat he won in the last round of local government elections.
Gqabi contested the Ward as an independent candidate and got 51.5% of the vote.
