Nelson Mandela Bay ANC Councillor, Lunga Nombexeza, appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrates’ Court on Monday on a charge of attempted murder.
The National Prosecuting Authority said he was arrested for allegedly shooting at a 42-year-old man in Uitenhage on Saturday night.
NPA spokesperson, Anelisa Ngcakani, said it was alleged that Lukhanyo Mdana was driving down Pityana Street in KwaNobuhle at approximately 11:45 pm when Nombexeza approached him on foot and started firing shots at him.
“The motive for the shooting is unclear at this stage,” she said.
Ngcakani said Mdana sped off and reported the incident to police who were patrolling the area.
The councillor was arrested and police confiscated the firearm used in the incident.
The case against Nombexeza was postponed to Tuesday for him to appoint a legal representative.
