The ANC and the DA have shared the spoils in by-elections in the Kouga Municipality.
The Independent Electoral Commission says the parties each won one of the two wards contested in Wednesday's by-election.
The DA's Desmond Pietersen defeated current Kouga mayor, Booi Koerat, to win ward five in Humansdorp, while ANC veteran, Xolisile Persent beat off his DA rival to take ward nine in Hankey.
The Democratic Alliance was hoping to clinch both wards which would have enabled it to wrest control of the Kouga Municipality from the ANC.
However, the ANC retains the Council by a slim one seat.
In another by-election in the Eastern Cape, the ANC won in the Nquma Municipality at Butterworth.
