ANC delegates attending the party’s crucial elective conference in East London will decide on Sunday whether the province will have a new party leader.
The leadership position is being contested between Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, and contender, Babalo Madikizela, at the 9th Provincial Congress underway at the International Convention Centre.
Speaking during the opening on Saturday, ANC national chairperson, Gwede Mantashe, cautioned against factionalism.
He said policy discussions should inform the conference outcome and not the leadership race.
Delivering the political report on behalf of the Eastern Cape Provincial Task Team, Mabuyane said the eyes of the province were on the conference saying, “to many of our people the ANC is still a symbol of hope.”
“Despite the challenges they see in the ANC, our people have faith in the ANC,” he said.
Mabuyane said Eastern Cape residents were “only interested to hear how the ANC in this province will improve their living conditions of abject poverty, unemployment, inequalities, and underdevelopment.”
Meanwhile, Dispatchlive reports that a court bid by some members to interdict the Dr WB Rubusana region from taking part in the conference was struck off the roll on Saturday.
