ANC councillors taken to safety following violent protests in Lusikisiki


The violent service delivery protests at Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape  continue and have escalated since Friday.

Provincial Police spokesperson Major General Zamutango Mki, says the local community is unhappy with the re-election of 3 ward Councillors in the area.

Mki says the protesters have blocked the R61 Road between the town and Port St Johns with burning tyres and stones.

Its resulted in the closure of local schools and other roads in the area.

Mki said one of the Councillor's house and vehicle were set alight and that 3 Councillors in total had been sent to a place of safety.

He added that police have been deployed from different parts of the province.
