ANC councillors back in PE court on assault charges

The defence attorney representing two Nelson Mandela Bay ANC councillors has made another attempt to have the assault charges against them withdrawn.

The charges against Andile Lungisa and Gamelihle Maqula stem from a violent brawl that broke out at a council meeting in October last year.

Lungisa is accused of hitting DA councillor Rano Kayser over the head with a glass jug‚ while Maqula is accused of stabbing DA chief whip Werner Senekal in the back with a sharp object.

Defence attorney, Luthando Ngqakayi, told the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's court on Monday that he has made a written submission to the National Director of Public Prosecutions to have the assault charges against his clients withdrawn.

This move follows a failed attempt in September to the local Director of Public Prosecutions, to have the charges withdrawn.

The trial has been set down to commence on the 22 and 23rd of January next year - subject to the NDPP's decision.
