Amy Leigh's alleged kidnappers to bring their own witnesses to testify in bail hearing

The bail hearing of the three people accused of kidnapping 6-year-old Amy Leigh de Jager continued in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court on Friday.

Friday's proceedings focused on accused nr 2 and 3 and whether or not they should be granted bail.

A 27-year-old teacher Tharina Human who was a Grade RR teacher at Amy Leigh's school is accused of being the mastermind behind the kidnapping.

The 40-year-old Laetitia Nel and the 50-year-old Pieter van Zyl are her co-accused.

All three are being charged with kidnapping and extortion.

The investigating officer in the case Constable Clayton Motloung gave the court a chronological time-line of the events leading up to the child's kidnapping and the suspects' subsequent arrest.

The State is opposing bail for all three accused.

Nel, whose legal representative Advocate Stoffel Venter cross-examined Motloung on Friday, was seen crying throughout court proceedings.

Her legal representative argued that Nel owned property and would not evade her trial.

Motloung did not agree and argued that Nel could interfere with witnesses and that their release on bail would disturb public order.

Accused number 3, Pieter van Zyl was represented by Lungelo Chirwa from Legal Aid who grilled Motloung on his testimony in chief.

Meanwhile Human and Nel brought an application to be transferred from a Johannesburg prison where they are currently being held to another holding cell.

The accused claimed that they were put in a cell with about 70 people who terrorised and intimidated them all night after hearing what had happened in court.

Magistrate Hussain Kotha dismissed the application.

All the accused are expected to bring their own witnesses when the hearing resumes on the 1st of October.
