Ambulance services grind to a halt in parts of EC

State ambulance services ground to a halt in Nelson Mandela Bay, Buffalo City and in the Amatole District on Friday.

This, amid a long-running dispute over the payment of overtime and allowances which personnel claim they're owed by the Eastern Cape Health Department.

Spokesperson, Siyanda Manana, said striking employees were not taking emergency calls nor were they ferrying patients between health institutions.

He said the Department of Health had approached the Provincial Treasury to effect these payments on Monday.

"We have also enlisted the services of private ambulances so that for critical patients we can ferry them to our facilities," Manana said.

Members of the public needing help have been advised to call the Department's toll-free number 0800 032 364.
