Knysna Police have opened a murder as well as an attempted murder case following an incident on Monday morning that claimed the life of an unknown man.
Southern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Malcolm Pojie says members of the K-9 unit were called out to an incident where two men were fighting in Main Street.
He says a 41 year-old police Sergeant attached to the Knysna dog-unit was stabbed several times in the head when he tried to intervene between the two fighting men.
Pojie says during the fracas, the sergeant pulled his firearm and fired a shot which hit the assailant in the abdomen.
Both men were transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
The assailant, whose particulars are not yet know, succumbed to his wounds a few hours later.
The policeman has since been discharged from hospital.
