Two suspects are expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Thursday following their arrest for alleged abalone poaching.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says on Wednesday morning, police received intel about possible poaching activities in the vicinity of the Noordhoek Yacht Club in Gqeberha.
She says a private anti-poaching unit joined police and together they spotted divers in the water.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says the divers from the anti-poaching unit entered the water and proceeded to swim towards the area.
She says on nearby rocks they discovered two green bags filled with a total of 128 units of fresh abalone.
K9 members managed to arrest two suspects, but a third managed to escape and is still at large.
Police confiscated their diving equipment and abalone with a combined estimated value of R150 000.
The men, both in their thirties, will be charged for contravening the Marine Living Resource Act, 19 of 1998.
