Six people have been killed and three others sustained injuries in a collision between a bakkie and an SUV on the R61 between Graaff-Reinet and Cradock.
The Eastern Cape Transport Department said the accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon.
Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose said the SUV, with seven occupants, was coming from the Western Cape when it collided with a courier vehicle with two occupants.
“Four occupants from the SUV died on the scene including the passenger in the courier van. The nine-year-old boy who was in the SUV succumbed to his injuries on arrival at Graaff Reinet’s Midlands hospital.”
Binqose said both drivers were among those receiving medical care in hospital.
“It's alleged that reckless and negligent driving were major contributing factors to the accident,” he said.
Graaff Reinet SAPS opened a culpable homicide docket.
The accident came on the same day that the Eastern Cape Transport Department announced a 30% decline in road accidents after Minister Fikile Mbalula released preliminary Festive Season accident statistics.
