The alleged kingpin of a vehicle finance fraud syndicate in the Eastern Cape has been arrested.
Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase says the 52-year-old suspect was arrested in Port Elizabeth on Monday.
It is alleged that this man is the kingpin in a syndicate that operates within Port Elizabeth and East London where he is linked to 22 cases of fraud worth just under R14 million.
Lieutenant Colonel Nkwalase says it is alleged that between January 2013 and July 2019 the suspect and his accomplices would apply for loans at different banks using fraudulent payslips and bank statements.
He says once the loans were approved and their vehicles received they would make no follow-up payments.
The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance in the East London Magistrates' Court on Wednesday where he is facing multiple charges of fraud, theft, money laundering, forgery and uttering.
The Hawks say more arrests are imminent.
