Alleged hijackers arrested after high speed chase in Gqeberha

Three suspects have been arrested just 30 minutes after allegedly hijacking an e-hailing driver in Kuyga.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the incident happened on Wednesday evening.

She says the 44-year-old driver responded to a callout at about 6.30 pm and while driving with three occupants on Missionvale Road, one of the men produced a firearm and assaulted the driver by hitting him in the head.

Colonel Naidu says they then pushed the driver out of the car and fled the scene in his green Renault Kwid.

She says police from Kwazakhele were on patrol and noticed a car driving recklessly on the R75 Uitenhage road.

Attempts to pull off the driver were unsuccessful and a high-speed chase ensued.

The driver disregarded several robots and drove over traffic circles until they crashed into a white Toyota Tazz and overturned.

The suspects made a dash to escape but were apprehended by the flying squad.

Police found a replica firearm and the complainant's phone in the car.

The men aged 22, 26 and 35 are in custody on charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle and reckless and negligent driving.
