Alleged hijacker with toy gun killed by motorist in Nelson Mandela Bay

An alleged hijacking and robbery suspect has been shot and killed on the N2 freeway, near the Kempston Road off-ramp in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the unidentified man was fatally wounded after attempting to rob a 40-year-old man whose Nissan Almera had broken down on the freeway at around 8 am on Friday.

He is believed to have phoned his friend for assistance before the incident took place.

Colonel Naidu says the deceased initially walked past the men asking for five rand, and when they said they did not have he walked away.

The suspect, believed to be in his early 20’s, returned a short while later and pulled a firearm on the two men, demanding the keys to the vehicle, a cell phone and their wallets.

Colonel Naidu says the 34-year-old friend then shot the suspect in his hand and chest, fatally wounding him.

It was later established that the deceased's firearm was a toy.

Algoa Park police detectives are investigating a case of attempted hijacking, attempted robbery and murder.

Naidu urged members of the public not to stop on this road, as it is a crime hotspot.
