Port Elizabeth police are searching for a suspect, following a gang-related shooting incident in Gelvendale late on Friday afternoon.
Spokesperson, Captain Johan Rheeder says shots were fired between two groups, but no one was injured.
He says police were called to the scene, and on their arrival, members of the community became violent, and pelted police with stones.
Rheeder says one of the members was seriously injured and taken to a hospital.
Police identified two suspects, and wanted to arrest them, but they ran away.
Rheeder says a policeman chased one of the suspects, and the fugitive fired shots at him.
The officer returned fire, and the 30-year-old man was fatally wounded.
He died at the scene.
The other suspect is still at large.
Police are investigating cases of public violence, attempted murder and murder.
