Alleged extortionists back in PE court

Two men who were arrested during a sting operation at the Port Elizabeth Airport last week will make their second court appearance on Tuesday.

It is alleged that the 39-year-old Luvuyo Chippa Baadjies and the 45-year-old Simphiwe Bans Waka demanded R100 000 from a developer who was building a satellite police station in Chatty, Bethelsdorp.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo says the developer was allegedly forced to pay the money or the construction of the police station would be halted.

He says the suspects claimed to be representing a "community business interest", however, it later emerged that they were demanding the money for themselves.

The matter was brought to the attention of the National Cold Case investigation Team which led to a sting operation on the 20th of January.

The two suspects were arrested at the PE Airport where they met with the developer to collect their money.

They made a brief appearance in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court where the case was postponed to the 28th.

Baadjies and Waka were charged with extortion, corruption and fraud.

Naidoo says the case was postponed for further investigation to establish if the men were involved in other similar cases.
