Eastern Cape police are investigating a case of murder after an alleged rapist was stabbed and assaulted to death in Ngqeleni on Saturday.
Spokesperson, Captain Dineo Koena says it is alleged that the 35-year old man was caught red-handed by members of the community, who responded while he was allegedly raping a 70-year-old woman in a forest at knife-point.
She says the victim managed to disarm the suspect and stabbed him with his own knife in the upper body.
Koena says it is further alleged that when the community members arrived at the scene, the suspect, who was still alive was assaulted and died on the spot.
The elderly woman was later taken to hospital for medical treatment.
A rape case was opened, as well as a murder case against the community members.
No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is continuing.
