A 34-year-old Eastern Cape man, charged with fraud, alternatively theft, has been released on bail of R10 000 in the Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.
Hawks spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela says Thembekile Nonqane appeared in court this week.
She says it is alleged that the complainant received his pension money of more than R820 000 in February this year, as his medical condition forced him to retire.
The complainant allegedly asked Nonqane to assist him by driving him to wherever he wanted to go.
Captain Mgolodela says it is further alleged that an amount of more than R620 000 was fraudulently transferred from the complainant’s account to another unknown account.
She says investigations revealed that Nonqane was the account holder and he was arrested on Thursday.
The matter was remanded to 19 January.
