Alleged drunk driver who fled scene of PE accident to appear in court

A 31-year old Port Elizabeth man is due to appear in the PE Magistrate's court on Monday on a charge of culpable homicide.

This follows a fatal accident in Beach Road on the city's beachfront in the early hours of Sunday morning in which a pedestrian was killed.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu says it is alleged that the driver of an Audi A4 was driving in the right lane towards Kings Beach, near the McDonald’s intersection just before 4 am, when he hit two pedestrians standing next to the island on the road.

One of them died at the scene.

The driver then lost control of his vehicle and collided into four stationary vehicles parked near the Humewood Hotel.

Colonel Naidu says the driver got out of the car and ran away, but was later arrested by police.

The deceased has not yet been identified, and the second pedestrian, a 26-year old woman from Zwide, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver faces charges of drunk driving, culpable homicide and reckless and/or negligent driving.

A very graphic video of what followed after the accident has since gone viral on WhatsApp groups. In the video, which was seen by Algoa FM News, the deceased can be seen lying in the middle of the road whilst another showed paramedics attending to the injured woman who lost her left leg.

In the video, her leg can be seen lying several meters from her body.
